Finding Mastiff Puppies for Sale

From the first time you saw a little mastiff puppy, you knew you had found your match.  You saw that massive, full-grown mastiff and thought there could never be a better dog.  Here at Mastiff Magic, we have to agree with you!  So now you have decided it's time to get a mastiff puppy to raise into your own overgrown canine companion.

But do you have any idea where to find the perfect mastiff puppies for sale?

When you first begin looking, you may think to research breeders in the area where you live.  This is a great place to start.  But don't limit yourself only to those people within a few hours drive.  Taking a new puppy into your family is a decision that you will live with for years, and it is definitely worth a longer trip to get the dog that is right for you.

So if you want to, go ahead and scour the classifieds in the paper.  But to tell you the truth, a better way to go is to attend a nearby dog show.  You will undoubtedly find a number of mastiff owners at the show, and they are the perfect resource for you.  You may even find some mastiff breeders at the show to talk to.  More than likely, both owners and breeders alike will be happy to talk about mastiff with you.  Mastiff owners and handlers can be extremely helpful, because they will give you an unbiased opinion on mastiff breeders.

If this makes you feel a little nervous, don't be!  Mastiff owners at dog shows are true mastiff lovers.  They love talking about dogs, and will probably be more than happy to share their opinions and expertise with you.  After all, they are concerned with the health and well-being of the mastiff breed, and will want to support excellent breeders.  They will usually be quite honest and frank with you about their experience with different breeders.  In fact, you might just end up with a handful of business cards to follow up with.  After the dog show, go ahead and call each of the breeders about whom you got a good impression.  You are under no obligation by calling and making some inquiries.  You are simply making a preliminary call to get some information.

During your call with the breeder, you should look for a few things.  Undoubtedly, you will get a certain "feel" from the breeder.  Even if you are not sure exactly what to ask or what the "right" questions might be, don't worry about that now.  In this first call, you should go on instinct.

Try to detect the breeder's motivation in breeding mastiffs.  Does he truly love the breed, or is he just trying to make money off of the dogs?  Of course the breeder is running a business, but if his top concern in the conversation seems to be money, that may be more important to him than the well-being of the dogs.  A better sign is a breeder who shows real excitement about the bloodline of his dogs, or who can't stop bragging about his perfect puppies.  A great breeder will also be very encouraging toward you as a new dog owner, providing you with the information you need.

Even if you love that first breeder you call, don't stop there.  Remember, adopting a mastiff is a big decision, so take your time.  Call a number of breeders so you will have a well-rounded viewpoint.  Then choose the one with whom you felt the most comfortable.  If you want a dog right away, you'll have to choose a breeder who has puppies available (or on the way).  The next step is to make an appointment to see the puppies.  Don't be surprised if you encounter somewhat of an interrogation yourself, when you go to see the pups.  This is the true sign of a good breeder.  Assessing the fitness of the new dog owner means that the breeder is genuinely concerned about the well-being of his dogs.

You may still be wondering what questions you should ask the breeder when you have the chance to visit him and his dogs.  Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been a dog breeder?
  • Why did you choose mastiffs in particular?
  • Do you breed dogs with the purpose of showing them, or for family pets?
  • What health problems are associated with mastiffs?
  • What are the pros and cons of living with mastiffs?

One thing you will need to be prepared for is the possibility of a waiting list.  A great breeder may have other clients in line to get his current litter of pups.  If that is the case, dig into your well of patience, and wait!  Keep reminding yourself that adopting your mastiff is a long-term commitment.  It is worth waiting for the right breeder to get the best possible puppy.  However, if the waiting list is excessively long, you may feel that you just can't stomach it.  In that case, go back to your list of breeders and see if you can adopt from your second choice, as long as you are comfortable with him or her.

Once you are committed to a specific litter, you will probably have to wait until the puppies are at least 8 weeks old before you get a chance to see them.  Your whole family should come along on a trip to the breeder's to help choose the puppy you will adopt.  By the time the pups are this age, you will be able to see their little personalities coming through.  All family members should get an input when choosing your new canine companion.

When making your choice, keep in mind the reason why you are adopting a mastiff in the first place.  If you plan to show him, or have even a passing interest in becoming a breeder yourself, you will need a dog who meets the physical standards of the breed.

If you simply want a wonderful family pet, however, then don't worry about physical "breed standard" perfection.  Just choose the puppy you fall in love with.  It's that simple!

After all this waiting...  can you finally take your puppy home with you?  That depends on the age of the pup.  But even if you have to wait just a few more weeks, you are almost there!  Take the time to build your anticipation and puppy-proof your home.

After all this preparation, you can finally enjoy the excitement of your own new mastiff puppy!  Enjoy!
